A comprehensive redesign that celebrates middle eastern culture.

Alex Hunting Studio were commissioned to redesign the art and culture magazine This Orient for its third issue. Volume three celebrates contemporary North African and Middle Eastern culture. The magazine visits artists in their studios to explore their art, and the influences that have shaped their work. We reimagined the entire magazine, introducing a new visual identity, grid and typographic systems, format and paper stock changes. We created a clean and minimal design to house and celebrate the varied and eclectic content, without overpowering it.

Typographic Palette

For the typographic palette, we selected Univers, designed by Adrian Frutiger, celebrated for its timeless elegance and versatility, characterized by its clear, geometric shapes. To accompany Univers, we selected the serif typeface Cardinal from Production Type. Combining Univers and Cardinal creates a dynamic typographic harmony that balances classic refinement with contemporary edge. Univers's clean lines provide a solid foundation for Cardinal's sharp angles to stand out, while Cardinal injects freshness into Univers's utilitarian demeanor.
