Project:
Rapha Mondial
Description:
A new print platform for cycling’s most iconic apparel brand.
Information:
We were approached in 2014 by Rapha Art Director Jack Saunders to lead the design direction of their new cycling lifestyle magazine Mondial. Mondial expands the idea of what road cycling is and what the sport can be. Featuring incisive longform writing and stunning photography, in Mondial you will find familiar cycling topics given a fresh new treatment. Our design direction was heavily influenced by the immediate post-war issues of La Gazetto della Sport, the Italian sports newspaper (founded 1896), many of whose midcentury issues covered the Giro d’Italia and road cycling almost exclusively. It used a variety of Italian wood block typography in dense columns of text to create impactful and engaging pages for its readers. During the magazine design process we collaborated with Colophon Type Foundry on a custom wordmark and two custom display typefaces, Mondial Bold and Mondial Regular.
